Collect Payment

After you create a trade, the investor pays for it. The trade's transactionType records how: ACH, WIRE, CHECK, IRA or CREDITCARD (or TBD until the investor chooses). This step moves the investment amount into the offering's escrow account and tracks that payment until the funds settle.

Payment Methods

Method How funds move Page
ACH You link the investor's bank account (through Plaid or with manually entered bank details) and call externalFundMove to debit it. ACH
Wire, check, IRA The investor or their IRA custodian sends the funds to escrow outside the API. You record the payment method on the trade. Wire, Check, and IRA
Credit card The investor saves a card through a Stripe form, and you call ccFundMove to charge it. Credit Card

If North Capital is the escrow agent and receives the funds, ACH and credit card payments must use North Capital's payment rails, which are the methods described in these pages.

ACH and credit card payments are billed in production. See the Fee Schedule.

Payment Statuses

Each ACH or credit card payment has its own reference number (RefNum) and a fundStatus that shows where it stands. A payment that fails does not cancel the trade: the trade stays CREATED, and you can start a new payment against it.

Status Meaning
Pending The payment is waiting to be submitted for processing. It can still be voided.
Submitted The payment has been sent for processing and can no longer be voided. It settles or is returned within a few business days.
Settled The funds have been received.
Returned The payment failed. The errors field carries the reason, such as an ACH return code.
Voided The payment was voided before submission and will not be processed.
Declined North Capital's operations team declined to process the payment.

A credit card payment can also end in Cancelled when the trade was canceled before the card was charged.

Use the updateExternalFundMoveStatus and updateCCFundMoveStatus webhooks to follow these changes, or look up a trade's paymentStatus with GET /v3/trades.

Trade Status and Payment Status

Payment status and trade status are separate. The payment status describes one attempt to move funds. The trade status (CREATED, FUNDED, SETTLED and so on) describes the investment as a whole. When a payment settles, North Capital updates the trade to FUNDED and you receive the updateTradeStatus webhook. See Trade Statuses for the full list.
